Subterranean Layers of Feminine Existence

By Kavita Nagpal

Neelam Man Singh Chowdhry’s "An Unposted Love Letter" based on a story by Doris Lessing is another play that deals with the loneliness of the female performer in reference to the society in which she lives. As a public figure and an actress, she is considered an outsider by conventional society. Her emotions and feelings are viewed in terms of performance. Nothing about an actor is perceived as real. Sitting in the green room, surrounded by the memorabilia of grease paint, mirrors, faded costumes, the protagonist - played with spirited elan by Ramanjit Kaur recreates the tensions and travails of an actor just before the stage entry. Food is the leitmotif of Kathakali dancer and actress extraordinaire Maya Krishna Rao’s solo of vignettes from urban life "A Deep Fried Jam". The various actions of cooking like baking, steaming, rolling, flattening become metaphors for events and situations in other spheres of our lives.

What the feminists want of me is something they haven't examined because it comes from religion. They want me to bear witness. What they would really like me to say is, 'Ha, sisters, I stand with you side by side in your struggle toward the golden dawn where all those beastly men are no more.' Do they really want people to make oversimplified statements about men and women? In fact, they do. I've come with great regret to this conclusion.

Doris Lessing, The New York Times, 25 July 1982
