LIFE'S JOURNEY

                                       - Radhika Singh

Ladies and gentlemen

Lend me your time

As I tell you a story

In the form of a rhyme.

My protagonist is a man Who,

the day he turned sixty five,

Grew tired and weary

Of this journey called life.

For although the road stretched ahead

And many milestones lay behind

He was walking aimlessly

This disturbed his peace of mind

Earlier he loved to walk

But it was different then

For he was young and strong

Competing with his fellow men

Then he met her on the road

With her warm smile and lovely face

She became that faithful companion

Who would stay beside him always

They were joined by the kids

Who skipped and swinged along

Together they moved ahead

Syncing their steps to a merry song

But then the kids moved faster

They took detours and went away

The man and woman missed them

But moved along anyway

They walked a little slower

For she felt tired and weak

He worried for the road was long

Chances of her going on seemed bleak

Then, one morning came

As the road approached a bend

She left him standing alone

Her journey came to an end

Now he dragged his feet along

On the dusty, narrow lane

Feeling lonely and depressed

Heart heavy with the pain

As he rested on a stone

A haggard man came along

He asked him "you look sad

Is something wrong?"

"Look at that endless road

I have been mocked by fate

For I am to walk that distance

Alone without a mate

And it's not just that

To add to my plight

I have no purpose

No goal in sight

My journey has no meaning

That is why I fret"

"Friend", said the haggard man,

"One thing you forget

The fact that you are around

Means you have a job to do

Your existence proves your purpose

So give the road back its due

Look at that orphaned child

He has no hand to hold

You see him wandering alone

Still your role you need to be told?

Hold his hand and guide him along

And that's not the end

There will be many others like him

Be their master, their friend

Help them carve their destiny

Your life will then have meaning

Embark on this journey with them

Let this be a new beginning".

Note. Radhika, who was then  a student of BA Part II at Government College for Girls, Sector 11, recited this poem during her presentation at the Seminar on "Towards Caring Society".
