My Guru - Sh. Harish Chandra Rai

Principal, Govt. College of Arts, Shimla

Self Portrait: A pen-sketch by Sh. H.C. Rai.

One is very lucky to have a true Guru in one's life. I saw in Shri Harish Chandra Rai the qualities of a true teacher and a nice human being. One just can't count the good gestures of one's guru, I am indebted to him in many ways. I have been receiving valuable guidance from him, both in theory and practical in the art of painting as well as in other fields of life, for the last more than twenty-four years. It has always been very easy and educative to talk to him on any topic concerning life, art, philosophy, ethics, aesthetics or literature. It was because of his initiative and encouragement that I did M.A. in History of Art in 1968. Whenever I needed any guidance, he was ready with the solution.

Sh. Harish Chandra Rai is an ardent lover of Nature. He has mastery over water colour, oil colour, pastel colour and, above all sketching. During the last two years he has held eight one-man shows of portraits, landscapes, sketches and miniatures at Shimla and Bombay.

He taught in Fine Arts College, Bareilly, and then remained Principal in colleges of Fine Arts at Nahan, Chamba and finally at Shimla. Even at the age of 69 he works for hours together.

He is equally competent in Indian classical vocal music, poetry, photography and sculpture.

I feel that he is among the top few contemporary artists of India, and I consider myself lucky to have been able to work under his guidance.
